چکیده
Mosx OF rile srtrDms of the effects d the commonly used inhalational anaesthetic agents on energy metabolism have been made in patients undergoing surgery. Exceptions are those of Oyama and his group ~-a and of Merin and Associates, ~ who studied effects of anaesthetic agents before the operations began. We have had the opportunity, during pulmonary function studies, 5-r to investigate energy' metabolism and electrolyte pattenls in healthy volunteers receiving a combination of intravenous agents, uninfluenced by surgical operations. The purpose of this paper is to report our work.

Comparison of althesin and thiopentone in anaesthesia for paediatric out-patient otology.
Althesin (0.055 ml/kg) as an anaesthetic induction agent was compared with thiopentone (4 mg/kg) in 87 children undergoing minor ear surgery as out-patients. The children were premedicated with pethidine and atropine and anaesthesia was maintained with nitrous oxide in oxygen and halothane. Both drugs were associated with similar reductions in heart rate and similar increases in respiratory rat...
متن کاملRedox state of the liver during anaesthesia as studied by parenteral galactose loads in children.
The elimination rate of a parenteral dose of galactose, an indirect indication of the redox state of the liver hepatocytes, was determined in 46 children during anaesthesia and surgery. The anaesthetics used were thiopentone sodium, propanidid, halothane, diethyl ether, and nitrous oxide, administered in seven different combinations. The results suggest no direct involvement by any of the types...
متن کاملAwareness during general anaesthesia for bronchoscopy and laryngoscopy using the apnoeic oxygenation technique.
Two hundred patients were interviewed before and after elective bronchoscopy or laryngoscopy. Premedication consisted of pethidine together with either atropine or hyoscine. Anaesthetic drugs were restricted to thiopentone and suxamethonium. Eight patients (4%) described some degree of awareness. No statistically significant correlation with awareness was demonstrated for the premedication, the...
متن کاملClinical significance of the effects of thiopentone and adjuvant drugs on blood sugar and glucose tolerance.
IT has been shown, both in a previous communication (Dundee, 1956) and from the findings of other workers, that thiopentone produces no appreciable change in the blood sugar levels in man. Slight hyperglycaemia resulted when thiopentone nitrous oxide-oxygen anaesthesia, followed morphia and atropine as premedication for operations on varicose veins. The rise in blood sugar during operation diff...
متن کاملAcute ventilatory changes during i.v. induction of anaesthesia with thiopentone or propofol in man. Studies using inductance plethysmography.
We have compared the acute ventilatory changes during induction of anaesthesia with equipotent doses of thiopentone and propofol in 12 premedicated female patients. Using ventilatory inductance plethysmography we have shown that both agents depress respiration to a similar and significant degree (P less than 0.001). However, although the functional residual capacity was reduced in patients rece...
